John Williams, an American, has been convicted at the High Court of Justiciary, Edinburgh, of the murder and robbery of Andrew Mather, a toll- keeper, on the public road in the parish of Lauder, Berwickshire. Mother's daughters found his body on the road-side ; there was much blood on the head and neck ; the clothes were torn to shreds. Williams was near the corpse, and ran away. When taken, he said he had killed the man, and that the Devil had tempted him: but he did not think they would hang him ; if they transported him, it was just what he wanted, as lie could not get back to his own country any other way. He is to be hanged at Green- law.
