`The Sun'

SIR,—May I clarify one point in Mr. Christopher Booker's analysis of the ills of the Sun?

Mr. Booker refers to the theory that the Inter- 'national Publishing Corporation would be glad to use the failure of the Sun as an excuse to break the pledge which Mr. Cecil King gave in 1961 to keep the Daily Herald going for seven years, In fact Mr. King. both orally and in writing, trans- ferred the unexpired portion of the Herald pledge to the Sun. He did this in July 1963 when the idea of replacing the Herald was first mooted. Mr. King gave this assurance to the Daily Herald Chapel of the National Union of Journalists, of which it was then my privilege to be Father.
