Youth and freedom

Sir: There is a recording of a speech by A. Hitler about bringing up the young: He described how they would go into the Hitler Youth, then the Labour Corps, then the SS or SA, then the army, then back to the SS or SA, etc, and proceeded to his climax: 'And they will never be free, for the rest of their lives.' This produced a monumental roar of applause.

One way to produce roars of applause nowadays is to promise freedom to the young. This is mainly performed by pop groups and other idols, whose aim is money in the same cynical way that Hitler's aim was obedience. The methods are precisely similar.

In fact, almost everywhere you look, those who make the running in today's media have merely turned Fascism on its head. Church, Kitchen, Children ? Not at all—women's role is exactly the same as that of men. Racial purity? Not at all—all races are exactly the same. Sexual normality? Not at all—abnormality is normal. And so on.

It suggests that today's myths and motives are no more worthy than Hitler's. All you have to do is to shout the opposite of what he shouted, and stagger to the bank with your royalties. You'rve jumped on the pendulum of history.
