Israel's responsibility

Sir: Surely your editorial (12 February) can- not have meant to imply that hawkish, ex- pansionist policies will 'improve Israel's security and prospects of survival'. Israel is estimated to be the fourth largest military power in the world with the third largest air force. The carnage inflicted on Lebanon last summer by the Israeli armed forces revealed the falseness of the image of a beleaguered Jewish state surrounded by Arabs lusting to tear her to pieces. Belligerence is a handicap rather than a necessity. If Israel truly wants peace and security, she must face the reality of the situation which she has helped to create, and cease her obdurate and cruel denial of the Palestinians' right to self-determination in some part of Palestine.
