There has been an alarm as to a case of

cholera in London, which has proved to be a false one. It was a case in Limehouse, and was due to a blow in the abdomen which caused inflamma- tion. There is no sign of any rapid spread of cholera in Europe. A few cases have occurred in Dresden. The disease appears to be slightly on the increase in Vienna, where the largest numbers of seizures and deaths in any 24 hours have been 88 and 33 respectively, but there is no indication of its really rapid march. There seems to be little doubt that physical, like moral epidemics, wear themselves out, to some extent ; or rather, we suppose, that the human frame so far accommodates itself to the Con- ditions which cause them, that they do not produce the virulent effects after long prevalence, that they produced at first.
