BURYING THE COFFIN

SIR,—First of all may I express my hope that this letter reaches you. I understand that the mails from this part of the world are subject to repeated attacks by the natives, who roam the streets in thousands, destitute and angry, awaiting the next' stage south.

One must agree with all that is said about the decadence of the North. It is surely self-evident? Why, one has only to take sport. We all know that Tottenham Hotspur arc an example of the superiority of London. Every newspaper has hinted so (even in its northern edition) for a half-decade. That this year Everton won the League and United the Cup is rightly ignored. Similarly with cricket— forget Yorkshire and think instead of the glories of Sussex, Surrey and Hanipshire.

Jodfell Bank is, as we all kriow, really a part of Kent. Trafford Park owes its existence to London finance and it is self-evident again that our next Prime Minister is a good Southerner.

It does not matter where you look. The 'freak' results of Manchester Grammar School— the thriving progress of ,the Guardian (sic, not the Manchester Guardian), the sales of the Liverpool Echo, the biggest council housing scheme in the world (Wythenshawe) are manifest evidence of the in- feriority complex of the North.

Take for example the tallest building in Europe— the CGS headquarters in Manchester, is this not proof (together with the fact that turnover per foot in Manchester's Market Street is amongst the highest in the world) of that city's decadent materialism?

We all know that the Dales of Yorkshire and the trout streams of Derbyshire are facades to hide the ugliness of Prestbury (winner of 'Prettiest Village in -England' award recently). It is common knowledge that Chalsworth and Buttermere are only deviations.

The Halle is merely a compensation for the top ten 'pop' groups from Liverpool. The department, of English at Leeds (not to mention Mining and Engineering) is a sop to Oxbridge.

The fact that within fifty miles of Manchester

live more people than anywhere else on Earth (of the same size) is further proof of the drift south.

Keep up the good work! Maintain your standards of objectivity. Hold the line that must be held north of St. Albans. The Barbarians are at the gate! They 43 Moorland Road, Didsbury, Manchester 20
