THE HOUSE OF LORDS

SIR,—Mr. Lennard's important letter is, to my mind, especially timely in that his proposal, if adopted. might well facilitate the emergence of Lord Home as the next Conservative Prime Minister. The omission of any mention of the name of this out- standing statesman and potential party leader from Mr. David Watt's article in your last issue can only be accounted for by the unfortunate habit of mind that automatically excludes from consideration any peer who might wish to remain such, whatever his obvious qualifications. I suggest that our country's condition obliges us not to waste our best men in second-best places.
