Eighty Thousand Rivers to Cross

'Good News' is, sadly, not the name of the new religious daily paper that may be appearing in November, but merely the heading. of the announcement appearing in the religious press at the moment. The paper is to be called the Daily Leader, but the decision to print will be taken only if 80,000 people pledge to take it for three years at sixpence a day. Its editor will be the Reverend Harold Goodwin, who was a journalist for forty years before he was ordained. The Daily Leader will be a tabloid with sixteen -pages. and it will look for the usual advertising except that it will exclude adverts for tobacco, drink and gambling. Well, good luck to them. They hale a hard row to hoc. The only precedent Mr. Good- win can think of is the pre-First World War Saturday edition of the Daily News with its long religious articles and leaders. The new paper is not to appear too puritanical. I hope that this doesn't mean it is going to strain too hard to be with it.
