A TASK FOR YOUTH SIR,—In his letter which you printed

in your issue of June 12, Mr. Anthony D. Steen makes out a good case for a very worthy cause, namely, the relief of loneliness and domestic help to a very large number of elderly people who through no fault of their own are in great need of such assist- ance and friendship. His enthusiasm for this cause and his efforts to get young people working for him and with him deserve the highest praise and support. Surely, however, prosperous industrial

companies should also play their part in this con- text. Having served for along period on the board of a very large industrial concern, namely Messrs. Courtaulds Ltd., I would say that whilst there is a tendency for more to be done for retired staff and workpeople from the financial angle, very little is done on the social side.

Industrial concerns, large and small, could and should emulate the example set by Mr. Steen and his youthful helpers. At a modest cost a great deal of happiness could be brought in this way to their old servants who in the past played their part in building up their present prosperity.
