The Court of Assizes of the Haute Garonne have just

decided a cause in favour of the heirs of Viscountess Hawarden. The lady had lived for many years at Toulouse ; and after her death, in 1839, M. Bonnet, her steward, set up a claim to her property. He affected to have filled a more familiar post than that of steward ; and after her heirs had taken possession, he produced a casket, which he said he had forgotten at the first search for her will : it contained a document that purported to be the Viscountess's will, bequeathing her property to Bonnet's son. The heirs charged him with forgery ; the Jury con- victed him ; and the President of the Court sentenced him to be im- prisoned for five years, and to pay a fine of 500 francs, with the costs.
