The worst pressure of the Lancashire pauperism appears to be
past. In the third week of March, 1864, the sum expended for out-relief in the distressed unions was 8,1441., whereas the average weekly expenditure of the year ended Michaelmas, 1863, was 12,947/., and the expenditure of the same week in March last year for the same purpose was 13,993/. This would seem to show a reduction of the pressure of about 40 per cent. since last year.
