`The Representative'

Silt,—Last week's correspondence page gave us a second unfair and irrelevant reply to Rabbi S. Warshaw. He is now accused not only of emotion bordering on fanaticism, but also of persistent scapegoat-hunting; and Einstein is quoted as paying tribute to the Catholics of Germany for the way in which they came to the help of the Jews. It will not do, however, to rebut Rabbi Warshaw on stray points of detail and with untypical anecdotes. I should like to ask your correspondents whether they can honestly affirm that the Catholics have con- sistently treated their spiritual forbears with adequate respect and loyalty. Put like this the question becomes ludicrous, and this is surely what the Rabbi is basically complaining about, even if some of his points are made heatedly and even in- accurately. The answer for the Catholics at this juncture is not to persist in compulsive self- exoneration but to plead guilty and ask for absolution.
