Night out

On 3 June the Labour party and New Socialist present 'A Night for a Nuclear free Europe' at Wembley Con- ference Centre. There are several attrac- tions, drawn from many walks of life. There are Julie Walters, E. P. Thompson and Tracey Ullman, for example, so if one has not heard of some of those billed Bernard Hill or Jim Barclay — one cannot be sure whether they are stand-up comics, public affairs lecturers or assistant secretaries general of the Amalgamated Union of Deckchair Operatives. Six lines down the billing appear Neil Kinnock and Denis Healey, the latter with no previous experience of nights (or days) for a nuclear free Europe. In fact, Mr Kinnock is billed beneath something called Pookiesnacken- burger. How are the mighty fallen, or rather, it would be more accurate to say, how the mediocre have failed to rise. Tickets cost six pounds, four pounds and two pounds (`usual concessions'), and the occasion is supported by the Socialist Group of the European Parliament. See ya there!
