RAILWAY RACKETS

SIR,—Thc spate of amplified canned music of Waterloo Station, of which Mr. Cole so feelingly complains, is trying indeed for passengers, but must surely be maddening fer. the station staff. The passenger endures it only for half-an-hour, and finds the assorted melodies interspersed with pleasantly enunciated directions which may be useful. Those who work on the station struggle against noise for much of the day, especially platform and booking-office staff dealing with awkward questions and questioners, and the clerks of the station post-office, who contrive nevertheless to work with a ' speed and dfficicncy I have not seen surpassed. Those deserve our sympathy and admiration. but their ordeal seems quite unnecessary.- Yours faithfully,

I. M.
