IT IS no accident . . . top businessmen think most British people live in con- ventional nuclear families, with a cou- ple of kids and a wife at home to tend to the man (and they think this, despite the fact that the cosy scenario only represents five per cent of us). It just so happens that that five per cent is largely composed of top businessmen.

(Geraldine Bedell, the Independent, 14 November) Even if all people married and had two children living at home it would not probably be for more than a quarter of their lives at most. Although very re- cently wives have increasingly gone out to work, the state of being married, with children and a non-working wife living at home, is one which more than five per cent of the population have gone through at some stage.
