Sir: I apply an efficacious impediment to muzak that I offer to Christopher Hog- wood (Letters, 5 November) and Kingsley Amis. When muzak has an adverse effect upon my digestion I draw my Smith and Wesson model 60 from an inside pocket and place a well aimed shot in the centre of the offending loudspeaker. The report, spurt of flame, and sudden silence is most stimulating, then I am able to continue dining, suffused by the warm glow of a job nicely done.

PS: It is most important to shoot the exact centre of the loudspeaker, to transfix the voice-coil. Shooting holes in the membrane just increases the level of distortion, which increases frustration and invariably makes a reload necessary.
