Tired legs

Sir: Mr Keating does well to laud the late blossoming of Graham Gooch's batting career (Sport, 19 November) since, on the figures presented, whilst it took Gooch 15 years to accumulate a mere 4,700 Test runs, in the last four years he has apparently rattled off a more encouraging 82,000 Test runs.

How I well remember Gooch's com- manding innings of 7,528 against the West Indies at Headingley, the thrilling 1,000 before lunch at Adelaide, and — surely his finest knock — that dogged 911 (n.o.) to save the match at Jaipur, in a monsoon.

I have long suspected that the cabal of white supremacist bigots which controls The Spectator is incapable of understand- ing so thoroughly decent and English a game as cricket. The only conceivable way in which you may now cleanse your filthy magazine is to dispatch forthwith your proof-reader to Australia. His/her (no sexism here!) unique talents will be urgently required as official scorer to the England team.

Alternatively, of course, you might order the miscreant to take a drive with an Aus- trian diplomat.
