A Forgotten Psalter (Oxford University Press, 7s. 6d.) of essays

represents Sir Richard Terry's excursions into the various regions of church music. They are collected from a number of magazines ; some of them have been revised and amplified ; in others, statements, which call for modification in the light of recent events, have been left standing. Whether he is writing upon the Troubadour; upon Merbecke or upon early Belgian composers, the author intrigues us with his lively style, and more than once provokes an argument. The chapter on "Sailor Shanties" is out of place in its context, but for all that it is interesting reading. The chapter on Samuel Sebastian Wesley caused a mild controversy when it first appeared.. It is difficult to understand why. Inci- dentally, it was contributed to the Music Bulletin, which is not given its correct title in the list of acknowledgments.
