Polling took place in Newcastle on Thursday to fill the

vacancy created by the death of Mr. Cairns (Liberal), and the result was declared on Friday morning as follows :— Mr. G. Renwick (Unionist)

Mr. E. Shortt (Liberal) ... Mr. E. R. Hartley (Socialist)

Unionist majority over Liberal ... 2,143 The Labour Party decided not to contest the seat in view of the compact at the General Election, when Mr. Hudson (Labour) was returned by the assistance of Liberal votes ; but Mr. Hartley, the Socialist candidate, received considerable support from the local Labour organisation, while the Irish vote was withdrawn from the Liberal candidate on the plea of Mr. Asquith's interference with the Eucharistic procession. The issues involved iu the election are too complicated to be discussed at the moment of going to press. It is enough to say that the action of the Socialists has presented the Opposition with the seat, and incidentally afforded valuable support to the advocates of proportional representation.
