Could a settlement last?

Sir: Manuela Sykes invokes the UN Charter in support of the rights of the Palestinians (Letters, 29 August) yet she is opposed to the UN Security Council resolu- tion and, implicitly, to the UN 1948 recogni- tion of Israel.

She pleads: 'If the principles embodied in the UN charter mean anything at all ... then the fate of 2,000,000 Palestinians is supremely important.' The principles in the Charter are not there for the exclusive use of the Palestinians. They apply with equal weight to people com- monly called Jews, unheralded in Manuela Sykes' discourse. What she thinks of their rights is clearly revealed by the phrase 'supremely important' in reference to the Palestinians.

Fortunately, General Dayan does not con- sult the SPECTATOR letters column when plan- ning for the security of the Jewish state. He and the people of Israel feel they too have a supremely important right to exist.
