The Philharmonic concert of Monday last brought fbrward our Eng-

lish musicians- to great advantage. Of the two symphonies, one was by Mr. Potter ; and it did great honour to his talents. Without being very original, it had. many happy. ideas ; and its construction was masterly, in the clear old style of-Haydn and Mozart. The other symphony was Haydn's ninth of Salomon's set. There was only one overture, Men- delssohn's Ruy Bias; the concert having been terminated by an orches- tral adagio-and fugue of Mozart, a fine composition, recently discovered ahVienna. Miss Hayes sang the great scram from the Freischiitz, and. the "Non mi die" from Don Giovanni ; and Mr. Whitworth gave Mozart's beautiful air " L'addio,".and an air from the Fuerusati of Paer. Beethoven's onlSr concerto for the violin was superbly executed by Sainton ; and' Miss retie Loder justified her reputation as one of our best pianists, by her ad- mirable pethrumnee of Sterndale Bennett's " Caprice " with orchestral etteempaniments. This concert, as a whole, deserves praise for care and judgment in its selection and arrangement.
