A very large meeting, convened by the Lord Mayor, and

attended by many City notables, was held in the Guildhall on Thursday, on the equalization of the poor-rate question. Alderman Sidney and Mr. Locke, M.P., took a prominent part in. the proceedings ; and, in spite of a smart opposition, resolutions were carried to the effect that the Poor Law required amendment, and that the best remedy for existing evils would be to equalize the charge for the relief of the poor over an extended area of chargeability.
