Prince Gortachakoff has been very ill with an attack of

typhus fever, and Prince Bismarck has been a little ill with an attack of shingles. Both are recovering, but it is probable that the elder Chancellor will take advantage of his illness to retire from a posi- tion the fatigue of which, in spite of his able assistants, must be nearly unendurable. Ile will, it is believed, be succeeded by Count Schouvaloff, a man as able as himself, and better acquainted with the modern relations of the States of Europe. The group which has governed Europe so long is beginning to break up.
