LAST OF THE VICEROYS

Sts,—As a critic myself, I am sceptical of writers who complain that reviewers have not read the books they write about, but Mr. Philip Mason makes me wonder. In his letter to you last week about The Last Days of the British Raj he writes:

My main criticism of Mr. Mosley's book was that his allegations against Lord Mountbatten were serious, but he did not provide the material which would enable anyone to form a judgment as to how far they were true. The main point of his comment [in my letter to you] was that he had grounds for his charges, some of which he quoted. But how much more telling if he had included these points in his book.. . .

In fact, of course, they were dealt with, as anyone will see if he reads pages 228-231 of The Last Days of the British Raj.
