Soviet designs

Sir: How comforting it is to be told by the Labour MP for Battersea North (Reality breaks through, April 13) that the Soviet Union has no aggressive designs on the West; but the truth of that statement is open to question. Is Douglas Jay's memory so short that he cannot recall the Soviet invasions of Hungary and Czechoslovakia, which clearly demonstrated that the Soviet Union has every desire and intention to keep the maximum number of people under its domination. But of course it could not happen here or in Germany, Italy, Norway, France or the rest of Western Europe, could it? It is very tempting to say 'no', but such complacency on the part of one of the men who makes decisions on the Nation's behalf is very dangerous.
