The last hopes of obtaining a reprieve for Sacco and

Vanzetti were exhausted when individual members of the United States Supreme Court declared their inability to intervene. Sacco and Vanzetti, together with the murderer Madeiros, were accordingly executed in the early hours of Tuesday morning. There has been a continuance of demonstrations, riots and explo- sions all over the world. In Hyde Park on Tuesday night a very large crowd was dispersed by the police. Some persons were injured chiefly through being thrown down by the jostling crowd which was trying to escape. There is no doubt that the whole Sacco-Vanzetti affair has caused considerable misgiving among many thoughtful Americans. As such incidents, which provoke hot foreign criticism, are likely to lead to bad feeling, let us be precise once more as to where we think criticism is justified and where it is not.
