A Necessary Retrospect

THE threatened labour trouble in the cotton industry, to say nothing of the talk of a strike among the 'bus men, at a moment when industrial depression is profound, and -we have some millions of unemployed, must be regarded with the deepest concern, and it may be hoped that even before this article appears in print the disputes will have been straightened out by some kind of common agreement, That there should even be a fear, however, of these further grave disturbances in the industrial world, and especially in the cotton industry which- is already so severely hit by diminished purchasing power and increased foreign competition, is a serious matter in itself, and I think is suggestive of an insufficient comprehension on the part of the public of the grave character of the crisis through which the world, and, perhaps, this country in particular, is passing.
