Clive Barnes

This week Clive Barnes bids us farewell on his Way to fresh woods and pastures new. A sad occasion for us, but it must be almost a unique tribute to a London critic to be invited to join so magisterial a body as the New York Times. We watch him go with mixed feelings of regret and gratification, we hope to hear from him frequently in the future, and, if it were not an unjust reflection on his past contributions to the 8Pet.tator, I should be inclined to say that nothing became him like the leaving it (see page 264). Whilst on the subject, if Clive Barnes gives the „Arts Council pause for thought this week, Stuart flood may give pause to Lord Hill of Luton. I note with interest Lord Hill's Saying of the Week, quoted in one of the Sunday papers: 'ITV pro- l'ammes, on the whole, are magnificent.' Heavily w°nic, presumably.
