The British merchants at Oporto have been attempting to com-

ply with a decree of Doll Miguel, in the election of a Judge Con- servator. In this they find a difficulty,—it is scarcely possible for the individual chosen to do justice to his constituents, and at the same time keep the favour of the Portuguese Government : hence the gentleman first chosen declined the office, and it was supposed that the second would do the same.
