Sir: With regard to Professor Brogan's letter of reply (13

December) to criticisms of his article on Bologna, when I gave the 1914-18 War dead as 812,000 for Britain (6 December), I meant exactly what I said, never supposing anybody to imagine that 'Britain' might in- clude Australia, Canada, etc. The total for the Empire was over one million.

I do not know what casualties Italy 'claims,' but the figure I gave appears in other books besides Whitaker and is likely to be consider- ably less than the British figure, since Italy entered the war only in 1915, mobilised far fewer men than Britain or France and mainly fought the Austrians on a not very extensive front in north-east Italy.
