The past and the present

Sir: Have Lord Robbins and Professor Hugh Trevor-Roper taken leave of their senses? Do the Metropolitan Police constables no longer exist?

Viewing the circumstances of Professor Trevor-Roper's LSE Oration Day address, as reported by you in your issue of 13 December, from a safe distance and, apparently, a much saner atmosphere, one can no more than con- clude that two equally famous academics have given way to a 'Che'-screeching rabble for no reason at all.

. . a student . . . appeared to present an ultimatum. . . .1 And, pray, what could the gentleman(?) do that could not be dealt with by the Police?

Moreover, you, sir, appear merely to lament the fact that such a situation can occur rather than castigate it in much stronger terms. The whole affair is a most shameful surrender by people who ought to know better and is part of an ugly malaise that has overtaken England. Ronald Cholodny 19 Metudela Street, Jerusalem
