Efficient

Sir After Al Capp's latest Spectator article (December 13), it should be obvious to most readers that he is a remarkably efficient journalist. In a few columns, he lays waste New York City, in effect labels Brendan Gill a hypocrite, demdlishes every 1976 Democratic hopeful in greater or lesser detail, and does not omit to swipe at FDR, the present Government, and the Honourable Mr Moynihan. He also manages obliquely to suggest that the suitable missile to knock down all the straw men he has so cunningly set up is a cheap oil substitute.

Perhaps Mr Capp's own creation, the adorable Shmoo — all things to all people — might he resurrected as a means toward this most desirable end. Failing that he might himself retire under the same cloud that persistently dogged his other friend, Joe Bltsflk. (I'm sure I've spelt that wrong, but then the 1950s were a long time ago in the United States, so I may be forgiven.
