EEC

Sir: Hugh Macpherson (20 Feb- ruary) tells us that the British must not vote in a referendum on EEC entry, because this might set a pre- cedent for rule by referendum, so causing such projects as the abo- lition of hanging and the laws against sodomy to be reversed, and derogating from the authority of Parliament.

However, if there is no referen- dum and we are dragged into the

EEC, Parliament will be reduced to the level of a county council, far lower than that of the legislatures in countries like Australia, Ireland etc which have referendums.

Furthermore, if we examine the record of our wise rulers we can see that whenever they have 'given a lead' they have been catastrophic- ally wrong as well as undemocratic. In thirty years they have reduced the greatest empire of all time to a state whose consul in Libya can only advise British women to sub- mit to rape by Arab soldiers lest worse befall. To a country known for its social peace and the unity of its people, they have introduced race and drug problems on an ever- growing scale, and by pampering criminals have increased violent crime fourteenfold in thirty years. Now, at last, they propose to hand us over, who thought we were fighting for our freedom in 1940, to disappear forever in the Eurasian melting pot known as the Common Market. No government by the people for the people could have been so wrong and treacherous so often.
