Post Office economy

Sir: The protracted strike by the postal workers is largely the result of the present rationalisation stud- ies being made by the board of the Post Office Corporation. The loss of business amounts to huge figures and may have serious repercussions on future profitable operations, and it is therefore desirable to increase efficiency at a lower cost.

One way by which this might be achieved would be the introduction of postage franking machines for public use, replacing the existing stamp-issuing machines. The meth- od would operate by the machine issuing gummed perforated strip, franked for the correct postage by inserting coins which would release

a dial turned to the amount re- quired, and a push button to issue the strip. Such a facility would widen the scope of letter posting by being able to obtain any sum for the required postage franked on the strip.

The initial cost of this reform would, in the long term, be covered by a considerable saving in stamp printing, etc, and the project even- tually prove profitable.
