Staunch reader

Sir : My subscription to your jour- nal coincided precisely with your own arrival and I therefore have no basis upon which to judge the good or harm you may have caused the SPECTATOR.

A worthwhile proportion of each issue provides me with sufficient in- formation and/or amusement to ensure that you have at least one regular reader.

I therefore do not require people like Alan Alexander (20 February) to constantly remind me how good the SPECTATOR was before you ruined it. Neither do I want to be told that the Notebook is rubbish.

You may have done. It may be. But I like it and so, I suspect, do the large majority of your readers who are not as absurdly sensitive about your right to be irrelevant as lam.

In passing may I ask Miss Collins (also 20 February) to remove her- self at once from the arena and to allow Mr Roberts and Mr Amis to lock their horns once more. Not since The Worsthorne last reared his fat head in Blackpool have I so enjoyed 'Letters to the Editor'. Lawrence Cummins 29 Greenstead Road, Colchester, Essex
