Black box conspiracy

Though the Confederation of British Industry is in favour, on virtually any terms, of Common Market entry it is very far from the truth to say that most of its members prefer joining to bi-lateral trade arrangements.

My straw poll among those with a direct knowledge such as sales managers, finance controllers and so on is that interest in join- ing seems to be confined to those who are connected with price volatile cartelised in- dustry, those in merchant banks and the city who thrive on chaos or if you prefer it change, Ashkenazim Jews who feel they are going home and most Roman Catholics who think what they are told.

Personally, I accept Joanna Skinflint's Black Box Conspiracy Theory. This briefly declares that like a reluctant suitor we stay engaged for as long as possible, getting Garr and other favours, only to weep croco- dile tears when we are, we fervently hope, rejected by the crack-faced belle whose amour pro pre we have left intact.
