HIGHER WAGES AND PROTECTION.

[To THE EDITOR OP THE " SPECTATOR."] Srn,—Your article on this subject in the Spectator of June 20th should be reprinted as a leaflet. The concluding paragraph contains the sum and substance of the whole matter so far as the working man is concerned. Viewed in the most favourable light possible, Mr. Chamberlain's nostrum amounts to this,—viz. : (1) the certainty of dearer food ; (2) the probability of slightly higher wages ; and (3) the possibility of old-age pensions. The working man, although a trifle dull in the " uptak," is not such a donkey as to believe in this bunch of Protection carrots dangled in front of his nose. And all for the good of the Colonies, too! We are all proud of the Colonies, but we are not going to throw over the Old Country at the bidding of a masterful Colonial
