Scottish Influences in Russian History. By A. F. Steuart. (James

MacLehose and Sons. 4e. 6d. net.)—Mr. Steuart takes us along a little-known by-path of history. His researches show that the first Scottish settlement in Russia was formed about 1581, by some eighty-five Scottish soldiers who had been captured whilst in the Swedish service. The English Ambassador, Sir Jerome Horsey, advised Ivan the Terrible to treat the Scots better than his other captives, since they were "a venturous and warlike people, ready to serve any Christian prince for maintenance and pay "—the countrymen of Dugald Dalgetty, in fact.
