Aboriginal question

Sir: Auberon Waugh wrote (Another voice, 6 June) that following my interview with Prime Minister Hawke, `subsequent scrutiny of the unedited transcript' showed that Hawke had not admonished me, as I said he had; that I had not asked a question about Aborigines and Hawke had n°1 refused to answer it. 'It was all flight °I fancy' on my part, according to Waugh. Not surprisingly, none of this is true. On both the transcript and tape the beginning of Hawke's admonishment of me is clear (it went on long after the tape ran out), my request to ask a question about Aborigines is clear and Hawke s reluctance to stay and answer it is cleat. Moreover, on the tape Hawke's theatrical walk-out in front of the camera is clear. lie does it often.
