Sex by numbers

Sir: Anne McElvoy's article on the mating habits of the German male ('We might as well make love', 13 March) confirm all our worst suspicions and prejudices about Ger- many being a charm-free zone.

My own sexual encounters with the Ger- man female have revealed with remarkable consistency that love will not be made until: 1. A towel has been folded double and laid securely across the top of the bottom sheet.

2. A family-size box of tissues has been placed at the ready on the bedside table.

3. A shower has been taken by both par- ties, preferably not at the same time.

Whether or not this says something about feeling dirty, I am not qualified to judge; I can only say that from the male perspective this behaviour puts something of a damper on spontaneity.
