Middle and off

BARCLAYS has forced Peter Middleton to quit his position as chairman — hey, hang on a moment. He was there the other day, but this is what EasyJet says, so we must have Peter Middleton trouble again. There are two of them. The one with the knight- hood is chairman of Barclays and the other is the motorcycling ex-monk with the secu- lar private life who used to run Lloyd's of London. Until last week he was apparently chairman of Luton Airport, where Barclays' venture-capital company has a controlling interest, so EasyJet has put two and two together and made millions. It infers that this must all be part of a sinister plot to jack up the landing fees at Luton, which is Easy- Jet's home airport. I put it down to tidy- mindedness on Barclays' part, or experience of the inadvertent libels caused by muddling the two Peter Middletons up. NB: the one in the glasses is Peter Middleton.
