The military and police authorities at once took measures to

prevent the escape of the murderers. All outward traflic was suspended, people were ordered to be indoors by ten o'clock at night, and many houses were searched and numerown arrests made. As it was suspected that sonic of the murderess had gone to a football match at Croke Park on Sunday afternoon, a mixed force of troops and police surrounded the ground in order to search for arms. Before the troops reached their positions they were fired on by Sinn Fein scouts, and they retur ned the fire. Other Sinn Feiners in the crowd opened fire, in order to provoke a panic so that the murderers might escape in the confusion. The result was that eleven persons were shot dead or died of wounds, two were crushed to death, and a number were injured..

The troops then searched 3,000 men. Thirty revolvers were afterwards found lying on the field.
