We sometimes wonder why more people do not take up

the study of those lowly organisms which can be viewed at small expense through the modern microscope. Microscopic Fresh Water Life, by Mr. F. J. W. Plaskitt (Chapman and Hall, 13s. 6d.) tells us how to begin and continue this most fascinating branch of amateur research. It is a book which may literally open up a new world to some people, a world moreover where the dilettante has his place, albeit a humble one.
