Sir Timothy Eden, the biographer of Five Dogs and Two

More (Longmans, Green, 7s. 6d.) tells us that " they cannot fairly be appraised above the rank and file of their kind. They are—or were—in fact, quite ordinary dogs." Alas ! for that " were," since six of the entrancing seven lie under a beech tree in a garden. It is a rather heart-breaking little book, but few dog-lovers would forgo the sweet pain of the reading. The lives of " Cash," the Great Dane, " Mag," the effusive whippet, " David," the Aberdeen, and " Mrs. Bull " that " baroness " in her own right," are recorded very charm.
