Extracts from Livy. Part IL Hannibal's Campaign in Italy. By

H. Lee Warner. (Clarendon Press.)—We are unwilling to let this ex- cellent little volume pass without a special notice in the multitude of school-books which, so difficult is it to judge of their merits without an impossible experiment, we are almost compelled to neglect. The intro- duction, suggesting and discussing certain historical parallels to- Hannibal's campaign, the illustrative maps, and the notes, are all admirable of their kind. Teachers, had they an unlimited supply of books of this kind, would find their work made vastly easier and more profitable. Nothing is better for boys who have reached a certain. stage of advancement than to read, with the careful attention which such an edition as this at once suggests and makes possible, passages of the first importance. The passages are taken from Livy amt., and com- prise accounts of the four battles,—Ticinus, Treble, Thrasymenas, and Cannae.
