General Gowon smells trouble

Sir: Perhaps Peter Enahoro (Peter Pan) be- lieves (30 August) his own myths. But even assuming what he says is true and that 'the leaders on both sides would welcome a negotiated settlement', surely it is significant (a) that General Gowon has shown a will- ingness to negotiate (for whatever reasons) by having discussions with Dr Azikiwe. whom Mr Enahoro regards as a 'Biafran' spokesman: (b) that Dr Azikiwe, in his statement to the press in 1-altos, said he was happy to be in Lagos and looked forward to returning to Nigeria: and )c) that 'Biafra' has rejected Dr Azikiwe and his attempts at peace-making.

Given these facts, which Peter Enahoro cannot deny, I wonder who he thinks is really concerned about the 'suffering babies of Biafra'.
