The New Philharmonic Society's concert on Wednesday had only one

noticeable feature—Beethoven's Choral Symphony, which occupied half the evening. The performance was painstaking, and tolerably correct. There had evidently been careful rehearsals; but the band did not play con amore, nor communicate to the audience more than they felt them- selves. A remarkably precocious boy, Master Barnett, played Mendels- solin's pianoforte concerto in G minor, with great intelligence and neat- ness, but without the strength of hand and fulness of tone necessary for Exeter Hell; where his appearance was premature.
