On Thursday night Mr. Gladstone announced, with a sting-livid highly

creditable to his nerves, that as the division on the Fran- chise Bill would be taken on Friday, he should on the following Thursday make his financial statement. This presupposes victory or some plan of meeting defeat other than resignation, and was calculated to be not a little encouraging to those waverers who like always to be upon the winning side.
