The new capitalism

Thames Television's one-hour discussion programme Something to Say returns to London ITV next Thursday with a debate between the Rt Hon Peter Walker, Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, and Dr William McCarthy, Fellow of Nuffield College and the Oxford Management Centre.

Mr Walker said in January that world history was evolving to a point where capitalism and communism are moving closer together in terms of social objectives. "Our goals are similar," he said. "Disagreement is primarily about the means."

Dr McCarthy, who was closely associated with the last Labour Government's industrial relations policies, considers Mr Walker's optimism to be 15 years out of date, and believes that the present climate of confrontation and instability will be with us for some time to come.

Bryan Magee chairs the discussion.
