• The department of the Charente Inferietire, which has usually

been Bonapartist, has this week returned M. de Bethmont, an Opposi- tion candidate, by 13,326 votes to 9,318. The event is considered in France somewhat significant, as the Government had three months during which to organize an official pressure. M. de Bethmont is .an unknown man, son of an old Republican, but the priests are believed for once to have coalesced with the Liberals.
